Kidney problems in hamsters.Kidney problems in hamsters tend to affect older pets.
Kidney disease in hamsters does occur and is often a result of a build up of abnormal protein in the kidneys as the hamster ages. (This is a condition known as amyloidosis) The protein is deposited in other organs as well as the kidneys but tends to cause problems here.
A hamster with poor kidney function will probably drink more than normal, urinate abnormally and lose condition. Urine and blood tests may be carried out to diagnose this condition but unfortunately there is little that can be done and the prognosis is poor. © Samantha Coe. All rights reserved.
